Character is Crucial

by Tom Swift

Character matters. In you. In others — both those you support and those with whom you associate.

Character is action. Character is what you do and how you do it.

Character is who you are. Character is who you will become.

Character is under your control. It is up to you and no one else to act with upright character.

Character grounds you. When you focus on your character, by default, you focus not on what you expect to receive from others — over whom you have no control — but rather on what you do in and give to the world.

Do not expect impeccable character from anyone else. That is an unfair standard to place on people. It is a blight on your character to wish others be without fault or flaw.

Do expect common decency in others. It it would be unbecoming to be indifferent to the grotesque, the unkind, the cruel.

Be specific about what good character means to you. You cannot hit a target if you do not know in which direction to aim.

It is not hard to find definitions of quality character. Different people have different standards. Many publish lists. Focus on a few. You cannot be all things.

Some traits on your list:

  • Grit.
  • Hard work.
  • Responsible.
  • Gratitude.
  • Sincerity.
  • Citizenship.

Character is not always easy. To be sure. But it is it’s own reward. The act is the prize.
