The Answer

by Tom Swift

Whenever you question what you shall do remember what makes you feel most alive and least aware of everything else: the work. The writing. What absorbs you without draining you — the body gives you the results and your mind registers the score. Trust in this absolutely and actively shun all challengers who would otherwise take from you the moment. For you will encounter no greater authority in this world.

There is a distinction between self-absorption and absorption in the work. These are two separate matters not to be confused with one another. Nor should you fear the former by following the lodestar of the latter.

After all, consider how much more freely you throw yourself into the world — how much open you are to love — immediately after you have tended to your purpose.

It is as obvious as the sun in the sky.
