The Moment

The final step of the three ‘R’ approach, refocus, is one of the most important aspects of goaltending in general. [Sports psychologist John] Stevenson likes to use the visual of a flashlight and explains that the beam of light needs to be pointed toward all the things happening in front of a goaltender rather than pointed at the goaltender’s head. “Your brain can only actively focus on one thing well at a time,” he said. “So if your flashlight is on your head, it’s not paying attention to what is happening right there in the moment. Next thing you know, the very thing you don’t want is the very thing that’s going to happen.”
